THEORY

Music Theory is the study of how music is put together. Learning music theory is not necessary in order to play an instrument, no more than learning how to read and write in order to speak. But just as illiteracy limits you, so does the lack of music theory knowledge.

At its core, music theory is reading and writing music. Learning it, is very similar to learning how to read and write another language. Music has its own alphabet and its symbols (7 tones, notes on the staff), its own rules for putting together words and phrases (chords, melodies, intervals, etc), its own punctuation marks (accent mark, fermata, flat/sharp symbols, etc.), and its own rules for complete paragraph and story structure (key signature, time signature, etc). So as with learning any language, it starts with memorizing the basic musical symbols and its rules.
